Band Identity

Updated: Nov 29, 2018

Novacane identify as a pop/ funk band, however we like to experiment with many different genres of music. Including, R&B, jazz, indie, shoegaze and soul. Our music and style are influenced my many artists and bands in the music industry, but I would say that the main ones are:

- The 1975

- James Brown

- PREP

- ANALOG SON

- Black Honey

I definitely feel we are a positive and productive band, and the common factor that brings us together is our love and passion for funk and soul music, which really helps us to easily write original music and to get up on stage and perform whenever we can. We are always keen to perform, and are very eager to hopefully play some external gigs outside of college in the near future.

Here are some clips of each of these artists songs:

The 1975 (Pop and Indie):

James Brown (Funk and Soul):

PREP (Funk and Pop):

ANALOG SON (Funk, R&B, Jazz):

Black Honey (Indie and Shoegaze):

We had our first band photo shoot this week and we went to a small place outside of town called Jericho onto a street with lots of colourfully painted houses where we took individual and group shots. Usually, bright colours are associated with pop and funk music which is why we decided to have our photo shoot there. One of the bands that have influenced our style, “Black Honey” did a very similar photo shoot to ours. I will put some comparison photos below.

As you can see in the photographs, the colours are eye-catching and vibrant. This is what we would like our style and album art to be like, too. Recently, we were introduced to a modern pop-funk band called “PREP” which have heavily influenced Novacane, not just with style, but also with album art and music, too. Here is an image of PREP’s first album “Cold Fire”:

We haven’t made an album yet, but we do have some logo ideas and band font ideas which are quite similar to that of PREP. Here is the logo we have:

We decided to choose a rubix cube for our main logo as it is a nostalgic image and reminds people of positive memories and their youth, which we would like to create with our music. As for the colours, again, we wanted to choose bright and eye catching colours, not only to fit in with our pop-funk genre, but to also make our band stand out from other ones.

The same idea goes for our font, we wanted to choose a bold font that stood out from the rest and also coordinated with our style. Here are a few fonts we like, we are yet to decided which is going to be our main one:

I wouldn’t say that we all dress like the genres that we play. I feel the individual style in the band is mainly influenced by the indie/grunge scene, usually we will wear something edgy, paired with something bright for example vintage Levi jeans (edgy) with a bright red top (funky). Black Honey and Analog Son dress using this method. Here are some images of this:

As for band movement on stage and in pods, I would definitely say that we aim for our stage presence and movement to be like Vulfpeck. Here is a clip of them performing:

As you can see in the video, everyone in the band are clearly enjoying themselves, tapping their feet to the beat, swaying and bobbing their heads to the song. Band interaction is also key for performing too. They are smiling at each other and dancing. It looks very natural and as if they do not care about any audience watching them. I definitely want Novacane to aim to look like this when we are performing.
